Drug suspect killed, soldier wounded in Lanao Norte firefight

PAGADIAN CITY – Security forces killed a suspected drug personality in a firefight that left one soldier wounded in Lanao del Norte province in southern Philippines, an army spokesman said Thursday.

Capt. Clint Antipala, of the 1^st Infantry Division, said Samolabao Tumog, a former village chieftain, was slain in Wednesday fighting in Nunungan town where policemen, backed by soldiers, were trying to serve a warrant to search his house following intelligence reports he was keeping illegal weapons and explosives.

Tumog opened fire on security forces with his automatic rifle and hitting a soldier. The former politician, who was also accused as drug pusher, was eventually killed.

“Government troops were about to serve the search warrant when Tumog immediately fired his M-16 automatic rifle that resulted into the wounding of one army soldier,” he said.

Antipala, quoting a report from Lt. Col. Rolando Orengo, commander of the 5^th Mechanized Infantry Battalion, said the operation was launched after authorities arrested 3 suspected drug pushers Jalal Diambarang Tumog, Pano Tumog and Hami who pointed to Tumog as the alleged source of shabu in the town.

“Samolabao Tumog was neutralized in a follow-up operation after the apprehension of the three drug suspects”, said Orengo, adding, soldiers recovered Tumog’s M-16 rifle and two rifle grenades, including a hand grenade, magazines and ammunition.

Brig. Gen. Ezra James Enriquez, commander of the 2nd Mechanized Brigade, said the killing of Tumog will significantly reduce criminalities in Lanao del Norte.

Brig. Gen. Roberto Ancan, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, also, lauded the efforts of soldiers and policemen, saying: “Our joint law enforcement operation with other government forces is relentless in order to protect our people from lawless elements and sustain the peace and development in our area of responsibility.” (The Zamboanga Post)

Marawi City deputy mayor arrested on rebellion charges

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Security forces have arrested Wednesday the vice mayor of Marawi City in the southern Philippine province of Lanao del Sur after he was accused of rebellion, an army spokesman said.

Captain Clint Antipala, of the 1^st Infantry Division, said Arafat Salic was arrested by soldiers and policeman before noontime at Marawi City Hall. He said Salic is included in the government list of people facing rebellion charges.

“Salic is included in the Office of the Martial Law Administrator Arrest Order dated September 4, 2017 for rebellion case,” Antipala said, quoting a report by Colonel Romeo Brawner, commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade.

He said Salic is now under “custodial” debriefing and underwent a routine medical check-up and will be handed over to the police. Over 300 people, mostly alleged members or supporters of pro-ISIS and terrorist groups are included in the arrest order.

Brigadier General Roberto Ancan, commander of 1st Infantry Division, lauded Salic’s capture.

“The 1st Infantry Division supports the Commander-in-Chief’s declaration of Martial Law. We will perform our duties in accordance with the law, respecting the rights of every individual and their properties. We take pride of the overwhelming support of the constituents and stakeholders in our area of responsibility as we perform our mandate to serve the people and secure the land,” Ancan said.

In May 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the whole of Southern Philippines under a state of martial law following the deadly siege of Marawi by pro-ISIS militants. Secretary Ernesto Abella, then Presidential spokesman, announced Duterte’s decision in a news conference from Moscow where the Filipino leader was on a four-day visit.

The martial law – now extended until end of the year - covers Mindanao Island and the provinces of Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi with Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana as martial law administrator. With the declaration of martial rule, police and military can now do searches without a warrant, arrest suspected terrorists and suspend the writ of habeas corpus, among others. (Mindanao Examiner)

Army deploys more troops to battle pro-ISIS group

ILIGAN CITY – The Philippine Army said it deployed more troops to run after a group of pro-ISIS militants who killed 2 soldiers and wounded another in fierce fighting in the restive Muslim province of Lanao del Sur.

It said the fighting also killed two militants, but soldiers only recovered one body in the remote village of Calaludan in Pagayawan town. Monday’s clashes were the result of a tipoff from villagers on the presence of Dawlah Islamiya members, according to Captain Clint Antipala, a spokesman for the 1^st Infantry Division.

Quoting a report from Colonel Romeo Brawner, commander of the 103^rd Infantry Brigade, Antipala said “Additional troops were sent (to the province) in order to pursue the fleeing terrorists as well as to ensure the safety and security of the local populace in the area.”

Antipala said soldiers from the 55^th Infantry Battalion were pursuing the militants, whose leaders pledged allegiance to ISIS and vowed to fight for the establishment of a caliphate in the troubled South.

“We are sustaining our focused military operation in order to destroy the remnants of this group DI-Lanao and make the province free from terrorists,” Brawner said in his report.

Brigadier General Roberto Ancan, the division commander, condoled with the families of the slain soldiers “who paid the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our people against the terrorist group.”

Security was also tightened in the province and more checkpoints were established to ensure safety of residents in Lanao del Sur. (Mindanao Examiner)

Troops kill insurgent in new fighting in South

PAGADIAN CITY – A communist insurgent was killed in a firefight Monday with government troops in the southern Filipino province of Misamis Occidental, officials said.

Capt. Clint Antipala, a spokesman for the 1^st Infantry Division, said the fighting erupted in the village of San Pedro in Aloran town after patrolling soldiers caught up with a band of New People’s Army rebels.

A military photo released to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner show the recovered AK-47 assault rifle following a firefight between troops and NPA rebels in Misamis Occidental's Aloran town on Monday, February 18, 2019 that left one gunman dead.

He said villagers secretly provided information to the military on the presence of rebels in the area. The gunmen were reportedly recruiting in the village. Antipala, quoting a report by Lt. Col. John Andrada, commander of the 10^th Infantry Battalion, said soldiers also recovered one AK-47 assault rifle in the site where the fighting took place.

“The encounter was the result of the information received by our troops from a concerned civilian who reported the presence of the armed group in their community while we are conducting community security operations,” Andrada said in his report to Brig. Gen. Roberto Ancan, the division commander.

“The troops scoured the scene of encounter and recovered one AK-47 rifle, three magazines and subversive documents with high intelligence value. Blood stains were seen along the withdrawal routes of the enemies believed to be those of wounded NPA members,” Andrada added.

Ancan has renewed his calls to rebel forces to surrender peacefully and avail of the government’s amnesty program.

“Listen to the call of the people, lay down your arms, return to the fold of the law and avail the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program. It is very tragic that he had taken arms against the people of Misamis Occidental when only through peace can development and social justice be achieved,” he said, referring to the slain rebel.

The NPA has been fighting for many decades now in an effort to overthrow the democratic government and put up a Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
