500 boxes of cigarettes seized in Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Three people were arrested and over 500 boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes were seized by authorities from a warehouse in this southern Philippine port city, Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco Salazar said Sunday.
Salazar said the cigarettes, branded as Union, were confiscated late Saturday in the village of Arena Blanco. “Three workers who were loading the boxes of cigarettes to a truck were also apprehended by authorities,” she said.
She also inspected the warehouse and the seized cigarettes and ordered police and military authorities to remain vigilant and alert following the seizure of the contraband. Authorities were investigating whether the cigarettes had been smuggled from abroad or had fake stamps.
Salazar commended authorities for their continuous efforts against smuggling in support of President Rodrigo Duterte's unwavering anti-smuggling campaign.

7,000 bags of Malaysian rice seized in Zamboanga
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Over 7,000 bags of rice suspected to have been smuggled from Sabah were seized by the Coast Guard in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said the Coast Guard confiscated the rice in the coastal village of Recodo after intelligence agents monitored small boats unloading the cargo from a vessel anchored off Zamboanga.

The Coast Guard, under Lt. Commander Noriel Ramos, immediately coordinated with the military’s Task Force Zamboanga to secure the smuggled rice and reported the apprehension with the Bureau of Customs.
The bags of, worth some P11 million, were discovered on a compound of a mosque late Tuesday, but villagers would not say who the owner was.
The seizure of the rice came after Mayor Beng Climaco, on orders from President Rodrigo Duterte, intensified the anti-smuggling campaign here.
She also directed Acting District Collector Segundo Sigmundfreud Barte to “clean up Zamboanga of smuggling, stressing that the city has been in the focus of anti-smuggling operations due to the failure of previous customs officials.”
Climaco told Barte: “It is the direct order of the President and the City Government to clean up Zamboanga City of smuggling. I hope you take this order to heart.”
Thousands of bags of smuggled rice had been seized by authorities in Zamboanga since early this year and in some instances had disappeared from the warehouses of the Bureau of Customs and even while being guarded by the police.
Climaco, who is supporting the extension of martial rule in Mindanao, said she also asked security forces to tighten checkpoints on highways. (Mindanao Examiner)

Smuggled cigarettes confiscated in Zambo
ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police on Tuesday said about 200 boxes of smuggled cigarettes were confiscated by authorities in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.
Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, a spokesperson for the regional police force, said the Coast Guard, local police and members of the military's Joint Task Force Zamboanga, confiscated the cigarettes worth about P7 million from a commercial vessel, Maria Rebecca owned by Montenegro Shipping Lines.
The contraband was smuggled from Sabah in Malaysia and sneaked into Zamboanga. Galvez did not say how authorities managed to detect the entry of the Fort and LS cigarettes that Galvez claimed is banned in the country.

Crackdown on rice hoarders continue, smuggling too
POLICE SAID IT is continuously working with different government agencies in its campaign against suspected rice hoarders in the country.
“Sa ngayon, we are having close coordination sa DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) and DA (Department of Agriculture) and NFA (National Food Authority). Binigay naman natin lahat, continuous monitoring natin sa rice hoarders. Meron na nga order coming from the Office of the President,” said Director General Oscar Albayalde after President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the police to crackdown on rice hoarding.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, however, said Duterte has actually issued the same order not only to the police, but also to Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año. He said Duterte’s order shows government’s resolve to combat rice hoardings.
Roque insisted there was no rice shortage in the country and said the supply will be sustained with the arrival of additional imported rice this year. He accused some rice traders of creating artificial shortage by resorting to hoarding to jack up the prices of rice.
He said opposition politicians have been using the issues of rice shortage and high prices of commodities against the Duterte administration.
Roque said National Food Authority Council has already allowed private rice dealers to import supply beyond the minimum access volume aimed at stabilizing prices and supply of rice. The Philippines is allowed by the World Trade Organization to import 800,000 metric tons of rice per year.
Just recently, thousands of bags of confiscated rice suspected to have been smuggled from nearby Malaysia had mysteriously disappeared from the custody of the Bureau of Customs in Zamboanga City.

And this has forced Mayor Maria Isabelle Salazar to again call the attention of Customs District Collector Lyceo Martinez and told him to act and be accountable for the smuggled rice and other items proliferating in Zamboanga.
She said millions of pesos worth of dried sea horses seized in Zamboanga also disappeared from the Bureau of Customs.
“Clearly, there is really an anomalous activity that is preferential towards those that are smuggling. I will never tolerate it,” Salazar said. “Smuggling activities must be stopped in our city, and I’m calling on his (Martinez) authority to act and be accountable for the smuggled rice.” (With a report from Christopher Lloyd Caliwan)
