Zambo Sur sexagenarian graduates in college
PAGADIAN CITY – “Age doesn't matter when it comes to learning” as the adage goes and this 64-year old pedicad driver - Generito Yosores, who is a native of Molave town in Zamboanga del Sur province - graduated with a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) Major in English at the Western Mindanao State University-External Studies Unit (WMSU-ESU).
Yosores, who remains unmarried, walked the stage proudly here along with 1,398 graduates from WMSU-ESU Pagadian, Molave, and Aurora campuses. He said poverty and age were never a hindrance in achieving his goal in finishing his dreamed college degree.
Speaking to the Philippine News Agency, Yosores said he first enrolled in an agricultural course, but eventually shifted to BSED Major in English as he wanted to become a teacher.
He dreamed of becoming a professional despite hardships in life, driving his pedicab during daytime and to earn a decent living while attending night classes. When Yosores walked the stage to get his diploma, the audience stood up and clapped their hands and proud of what he has achieved and the inspiration it gives to others who wanted to finish their education.
Feeling elated, Yosores said he completed the degree in four straight years, studying late at night especially during examinations to make sure he will pass all the tests given by his professors. After graduation, Yosores said he wanted to take the next step and that is to look for a job and a wife and raise a family to fulfill his dream.
He also urged the youth to finish their studies because this will lead them to a better future. Yosores’ inspiring perseverance and life story has become viral on social media. (Leah Agonoy)

Stay out of politics, Customs personnel told
CEBU CITY - The Bureau of Customs has strongly warned its personnel not to engage in any partisan political activity or solicit and accept contributions for candidates running in the May polls.
District Collector Elvira Cruz said those who will violate the order will face both criminal and administrative charges.
“I issued a memo last week, emphasizing that we, officials and employees, of Customs, who are covered under the Civil Service law, are not allowed to join in any political event,” Cruz told the Philippine News Agency.
In the memorandum she issued, Cruz said it is prohibited for Customs personnel to engage in “electioneering, engaging in political activities, and soliciting contribution for political candidates.”
She reminded personnel that under Section 261 (i) of the Omnibus Election Code, “intervention of public officers and employees” in election-related activities is considered an election offense. (John Rey Saavedra)

Don’t buy pirated CDs, DVDs - OMB
ILIGAN CITY – The Optical Media Board (OMB) warned unscrupulous traders from selling pirated movie CDs and DVDs and computer software and games or face criminal charges.
It also urged the public not to buy pirated movies and softwares and instead report them to the OMB and help the government fight piracy.
Just recently, a team of OMB raided many stalls selling pirated CDs and DVDs in Iligan City following mounting complaints from movie producers and intellectual property rights owner on the rampant trading of pirated optical media there.
OMB chairman Anselmo Adriano said they confiscated many pirated music and movies CDs and DVDs here.
He said they also seized duplicating machines and hundreds of blank CDs and DVDs and printers from unscrupulous traders. He said they will file charges against the erring traders for violating the Optical Media Act. (Mindanao Examiner. With a report from Divina Suson)

OPINION: Of PNA and Sputnik by Jun Ledesma
WHAT HAS RAPPLER'S Pia Ranada against the Philippine News Agency’s plan of having a sharing arrangement of news and feature articles with Russia’s Sputnik own news agency? For owing so much allegiance to US-based Omidyar Network that invested on Rappler, Ranada cannot keep her bias and prematurely hint that PNA’s idea of exchanging news articles and opinion items with Sputnik is not to the comfort of the Philippines in terms of security.
In asserting that Sputnik is part of Russia’s propaganda machine, Rappler only succeeded in resurrecting the scandal involving the role of Omidyar Network (ON) in demonizing and destabilizing the government of Ukraine that led to the overthrow of its President Yanukovych, a pro-Russian leader. ON, if we remember, figured prominently in the scandal involving its substantial dollar investment on Rappler which led to the revocation of its license. This media outfit had paraded as a 100% Filipino corporation but the fact that it issued Philippine Depository Receipts indicated that ON exercises control on its business and editorial policies. Of course, the easy exit from this tight fix was for ON to waive its PDRs and “donated” them to its Filipino staff.
The last thing that Rappler’s Ranada should do therefore is to preach that “there is nothing to gain from this news cooperation except to learn from a country that has succeeded in turning lies into truths…”.
Brave words from a social news network that had been involved in spreading preposterous stories involving the Davao Death Squad and super-bloated figures of what it claimed as victims of Extra-Judicial Killings. It is the height of journalistic hubris to suggest that they alone, and not the staff and writers of PNA, have the credentials to take the responsibility of monitoring and identifying what are trolls and fakes in various media platforms.
There are a lot of things to know and learn about Russia and this plan of sharing of news and other articles can only lead to better understanding of the political, economic and social issues surrounding Russia that had been deprived of us until today. From my short-pant days and now when I have few strands of hair left and shaking knees, I remain to be in limbo about what is inside Russia.
But yes, last October I made it to St. Petersburg, a Russian City by the Baltic Sea. Stayed in that magnificent city for two days. And I must say that indeed I am quite lucky to have set foot in this cultural, economic and scientific center of Russia. Isn’t it informative if we read stories, see video clips and photos about what’s in Russia and they about the Philippines? We have a lot of things to learn from each other and for as long as the Philippine News Agency will not accept investments from shady source I do not think that news exchanges will have any impact on our security at all.
By the way Sputnik news agency has regional offices in Washington, Beijing, Singapore, London Cairo and Edinburgh. So what are we so scared of? (Jun Ledesma)
