Soldiers seized boat loaded with chemical used as IED ingredient
It said four people were taken into custody by the soldiers and being interrogated by the military. The chemical, which is banned in the Philippines, is usually used by rebels as a key ingredient in the manufacture of homemade bombs. It did not say how many kilos were seized from the four men, but each bag of ammonium nitrate typically is 25 kilos.
The military said the chemical originated from Siasi Island off Sulu province and heading to Basilan when members of the 83rd and 84th Inshore Boat Companies spotted and intercepted the boat and arrested its skipper and passengers. It was not immediately known whether those being held by the soldiers are members of the Abu Sayyaf or other rebel group operating in Basilan.
Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, chief of the Western Mindanao Command, said those arrested will be handed over to the police so criminal charges can be filed against them. “Sailors and marines operate in maritime areas of Western Mindanao to curb smuggling and other illegal activities that affect the security and development in Mindanao,” he said.
Just last month, police also seized half a ton of ammonium nitrate following a sea chase off Zamboanga City that led to the capture of five men. A maritime police patrol spotted a suspicious boat off Taluksangay village on February 23 and gave chase after the vessel did not stop for security inspection.
The boat was eventually apprehended and its passengers arrested after policemen discovered its cargo of 20 bags of ammonium nitrate weighing 25 kilos each and had markings that showed it was made in South Korea by Huchems Fine Chemical Corporation. (Mindanao Examiner)

500 kilos of chemical used as IED ingredient seized in Zambo
A maritime police patrol spotted a suspicious boat off Taluksangay village on Saturday and gave chase after the vessel did not stop for security inspection. The boat was eventually apprehended and its passengers arrested after policemen discovered its cargo of 20 bags of ammonium nitrate.
Each bag is weighing 25 kilos. The ammonium nitrate, made in South Korea by Huchems Fine Chemical Corporation, is a common ingredients in improvised explosives and is banned in the Philippines.
Police were interrogating those arrested Ismol Malsani, Kadoh Kahamkam, Jinali Marosali, Makamil Malan and Mastal Malsani to determine whether if they are members of any rebel group or who was behind the foiled smuggling of the chemical to Zamboanga.
Just this month, a group of communist insurgents surrendered to the military and handed over 40 kilos of ammonium nitrate and 190 blasting caps they used in making homemade bombs in Compostela Valley’s Monkayo town, also in the restive region.
Last year, police raided a house in Taluksangay village and seized two one-liter bottles containing ammonium nitrate and weapons from Samandi Imbas and Sagumbahar Akbar.
In August 2017, police here also confiscated 300 kilos of ammonium nitrate and dozens of blasting caps in a raid on a house in the coastal village of Arena Blanco.
The house owner, Pagal Aliasan, 25, admitted purchasing the chemical from the black market in Tawi-Tawi, one of 5 provinces under the Muslim autonomous region, and sold homemade explosives to fishermen. (Mindanao Examiner)

Politician’s house in Zamboanga bombed
Police said the blast damaged the porch of the house of Henry Gregorio, a village councilor in Tagasilay. The bomb exploded at around 2.50 in the morning of Tuesday, according to Chief Insp. Helen Galvez, a regional police spokeswoman.
“The porch of the house was partially damaged due to the explosion. No casualties were reported,” Galvez said.
Gregorio told police investigators that an unidentified man went to his place recently and asked about his identity and then left the place. It was unknown whether the man was a suspect in the bombing or not.
Galvez said the police had recovered some debris from the area and were investigating the blast. “Members of the Explosive Ordnance Division who responded to the blast are conducting an investigation. They took some debris in the blast site for laboratory examination,” she said.
The motive of the bombing is still unknown and police were looking into grudge as one of its motives for the attack.
Mayor Beng Climaco has ordered authorities to tighten security here following a deadly bombing on New Year’s Eve outside the South Seas Mall in Cotabato City. Two persons were killed and 47 others wounded in the powerful blast blamed by the police and military to pro-ISIS militants. (Mindanao Examiner)

2 pro-ISIS gunmen killed in South
It said the two men were in a van and opened fire on soldiers in Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat province sparking a running gun battle. The duo was cornered by security forces and eventually killed.
When soldiers and policemen searched the vehicle, they found a black flag with markings similar to those use by the ISIS. They also recovered an improvised explosive device and a sub-machine gun, including an automatic pistol.
The identities of the slain gunmen were unknown, but police have searched the van for vital information and clues that would help in the anti-terror investigation.
No individual or group has claimed the bodies of the two men. The province is a known lair of several pro-ISIS militant groups, including the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, which is fighting for the establishment of caliphate in the restive region. (Mindanao Examiner)
